Es el tipo de ancla clásica que evolucionó a partir del primitivo modelo utilizado en el mundo antiguo. Se distingue por su gran agarre en fondo duro, de arcilla y de arena, pero de rendimiento inferior en fondo de limo o barro. Por su tamaño y peso resulta difícil de estibar -aunque existen modelos de uñas plegables-, siendo por lo tanto inadecuada para barcos de eslora menor a 30 pies pero imprescindible en barcos de dimensiones mayores (goleta y ketch). Otro de sus inconvenientes es que se debe fondear con precaución para que la cadena no se enrede en el cepo y pierda su eficiencia.
