The blood-brain barrier, is composed anatomically of unique endothelial cells that lack the usual transendothelial channels and that seamlessly abut one another (tight junctions). This anatomy protects the brain against the fluctuating composition of blood and minimizes the entry of potentially toxic compounds.

La BHE consiste en una monocapa de células del lecho capilar que previene la formación de ultrafiltrados plasmáticos. Las células endoteliales del SNC [sistema nervioso central] se hallan íntimamente interconectadas por tight junctions, carecen de fenestración y muestran pocas vesículas pinocitósicas. Estas características estructurales del endotelio vascular cerebral constituyen una barrera selectiva para controlar el paso de sustancias de la sangre al neuropilo. Las células endoteliales conforman la barrera hematoencefálica(BHE).
