Une différence de potentiel appliquée sur la puce semi-conductrice repousse, vers la couche active, des «trous» (des «charges positives») de la couche de type p, et des électrons de la couche de type n. Lorsqu'ils se rencontrent, ils libèrent des photons. La «couleur» de ces photons, c'est-à-dire leur longueur d'onde, dépend de la composition chimique des couches, et non des boîtiers colorés dans lesquels les fabricants logent les diodes de manière à les identifier.
