Para el funcionamiento de la mayor parte de los reactores nucleares se utiliza un combustible llamado uranio enriquecido. A este mineral se le someta a diferentes procesos para lograr que llegue a contener aproximadamente el 3% de núcleos de uranio 235, que son los que darán lugar a la reacción en cadena. El combustible nuclear se prepara en forma de pastillas. Estas pastillas de combustible se colocan en unos tubos inoxidables y después en el núcleo del reactor.

Hay tres barreras principales para prevenir la liberación de los productos de la fisión. La primera barrera es el revestimiento metálico.
