The diversion of radiation (thermal, electromagnetic, or nuclear) from its original path as a result of interaction or collisions with atoms, molecules, or larger particles in the atmosphere or other media between the source of the radiation (e.g. a nuclear explosion) and a point at some distance away.

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT

The scattering of EM [electromagnetic] energy caused by particles in the atmosphere which are much larger than the wavelengths of the energy. 2, record 5, English, - non%2Dselective%20scattering
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Non-selective scattering is produced by water droplets, ice fragments or large dust particles which are larger than the radiation wavelength. Such particles directly reflect any incident radiation. When the particles are sufficiently dense they act as an opaque layer between the sensor and the Earth's surface. Cloudy and dust-laden atmospheres cause non-selective scattering in the visible and infrared wavelengths and thus reduce the effectiveness of data in these spectral regions for remote sensing of the Earth's surface. 3, record 5, English, - non%2Dselective%20scattering
