The annual observance of Disarmament Week, which begins on the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, was called for in the Final Document of the General Assembly 1978 special session on disarmament (resolution S-10/2). States were invited to highlight the danger of the arms race, propagate the need for its cessation and increase public understanding of the urgent tasks of disarmament.

En el Documento Final del periodo extraordinario de sesiones de la Asamblea General de 1978 dedicado al desarme(resolución S-10/2), se pidió la observancia anual de la Semana del Desarme, que comienza en la fecha en que se celebra el aniversario de la fundación de las Naciones Unidas. Se invitó a los Estados a poner de relieve el peligro que representa la carrera armamentista, propagar la necesidad de que cese y hacer que el público entienda la urgencia de las tareas de desarme.
