The use of fumigants such as methyl bromide and epoxides (i.e., ethylene and propylene oxides) is important in the treatment of large volumes of foodstuffs to destroy insects. In addition, ethylene oxide - carbon dioxide processes have been developed for greatly reducing the bacterial populations of heat sensitive, highly flavored substances; spices are given such treatments to reduce to tolerable amounts the incidence of thermophilic contaminants. 4, record 17, English, - ethylene%20oxide

Less well-modified malt, however, benefits from a period of mashing at lower temperatures to permit the breakdown of proteins and glucans. This requires some form of temperature programming, which is achieved by decoction mashing. After grist is mashed in at 35° to 40°C (95° to 105°F), a proportion is removed, boiled, and added back. Mashing with two or three of these decoctions raises the temperature in stages to 65°C. The decoction process, traditional in lager brewing, uses four to six volumes of water per volume of grist and requires a second vessel called the mash cooker. 1, record 18, English, - decoction

The process most widely used to desalt sea-water is known as multistage flash distillation. [In] this process ... the seawater is heated and then introduced into a chamber where the pressure is sufficiently low to cause some of the water to boil instantly -or to flash- into steam. The brine that did not vaporize flows to the next chamber where the pressure is lower than in the previous chamber, and the flashing process is repeated. 1, record 38, English, - multistage%20flash%20distillation

1, record 38, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20de%20distillation%20par%20d%C3%A9tentes%20successives

Record number: 40, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The evaporation rate is a measure of how quickly the material becomes a vapour at normal room temperature. Usually, the evaporation rate is given in comparison to certain chemicals, such as butyl acetate, which evaporate fairly quickly. For example, the rate might be given as "0.5 (butyl acetate=1)." This means that, under specific conditions, 0.5 grams of the material evaporates during the same time that 1 gram of butyl acetate evaporates. Often, the evaporation rate is given only as greater or less than 1, which means the material evaporates faster or slower than the comparison chemical. In general, a hazardous material with a higher evaporation rate presents a greater hazard than a similar compound with a lower evaporation rate. 3, record 40, English, - evaporation%20rate

3, record 40, French, - vitesse%20d%27%C3%A9vaporation
