La Geriatría ha sido definida como la rama de la Medicina [...] que se preocupa de los aspectos clínicos, preventivos, terapéuticos y sociales de las enfermedades en los ancianos. Esta definición es muy amplia y cubre, además del diagnóstico y tratamiento, los aspectos sociales y sicológicos de dichos pacientes y sugiere el uso de un equipo multidisciplinario de salud en el manejo de sus enfermedades. La función primaria de la Geriatría es el diagnóstico de las incapacidades que se han producido. El propósito es que, a través del tratamiento y de la rehabilitación, los pacientes mayores vuelvan a su estado previo y de este modo logren una máxima independencia para desenvolverse en la comunidad.
