Le terme «cautère» désignait autrefois une tige métallique chauffée au rouge, utilisée pour brûler superficiellement la peau ou les tissus. Aujourd'hui, on utilise des cautères tant chimiques que physiques. Les cautères physiques les plus courants sont désormais le thermocautère et le galvanocautère (fil de platine maintenu incandescent sous l'action d'une vapeur d'essence minérale ou du passage d'un courant électrique).
