Emprendedor y apasionado por la investigación, Henri Nestlé comenzó a preocuparse por elaborar un producto alimenticio que ayudara a combatir la altísima mortalidad infantil de la época : uno de cada cinco niños suizos fallecía antes de cumplir el primer año de edad. Después de muchas pruebas, hacia 1866 consiguió una fórmula compuesta de leche, azúcar y harina de trigo, a la que bautizó como harina alimenticia primero y después como harina lacteada.
