La epirogénesis se distingue de la orogénesis por el radio de curvatura, mucho menor, de las deformaciones : el levantamiento del suelo da lugar a la formación de pendientes de 1 a 2º en la primera y de 10 a 70º en la segunda. Por lo general los movimientos epirogénicos son consecuencia de un desequilibrio isostático que ellos tienden a anular. Así, por ejemplo, al retroceder el casquete polar, enormes masas de hielo se fundieron sobre el escudo escandinavo que, así descargado, va elevándose progresivamente.
