biochemical oxygen demand; biological oxygen demand; BOD; B.O.D.: [These terms and abbreviations can also refer] to a chemical procedure for determining this amount. This is not a precise quantitative test, although it is widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per litre of sample during 5 days of incubation at 20 °C and is often used as a robust surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water. ... BOD can be used as a gauge of the effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants. ... BOD is similar in function to chemical oxygen demand (COD), in that both measure the amount of organic compounds in water. However, COD is less specific, since it measures everything that can be chemically oxidized, rather than just levels of biologically active organic matter. 2, record 3, English, - biochemical%20oxygen%20demand

Zones of Water Pollution. Discharge or mixing zone is where pollutants enter the stream or the river. If the waste is dark, it will make the water dark, increase its temperature and subsequently oxygen levels will drop. The rate of discharge should not be stronger than flow of the stream. In zone of degradation oxygen levels drop from BOD (biological/biochemical oxygen demand). Zone of active decomposition is characterized by the following changes: 1) dissolved oxygen (DO) will be at its absolute minimum; 2) odors and gases bubbling up. In the zone of recovery the river will slowly restore its oxygen through aeration process. The anaerobic conditions will disappear. Nitrites will be converted into nitrates and stimulate growth of algae, which will produce oxygen through process of photosynthesis. In zone of clean water oxygen levels are really elevated. And BOD is almost satisfied. 1, record 20, English, - zone%20of%20recovery

Pollution of Streams and Lakes. Streams and Oxygen Consuming Wastes ,,, The different zones of a stream in this case are: - the clean zone as the river enters the point of contamination; - the decomposition zone where the wastes are decomposing and using the water's O2; - The septic zone where there are limited life forms found due to the lack of O2; - The recovery zone, where the stream begins to recover some O2, and - The clean zone, where again game fish and diverse life forms can be found. 1, record 21, English, - decomposition%20zone
