L'hyperthermie doit être distinguée de la fièvre. Si ces deux phénomènes sont caractérisés par une élévation de la température de l'organisme, ils n'ont pas la même origine. L'hyperthermie est due à une accumulation de chaleur et constitue un phénomène anormal. La fièvre est quant à elle due à un déplacement du point d'équilibre thermique et constitue un mécanisme de défense de l'organisme.

Se define como un síndrome caracterizado por hipertermia (temperatura corporal por arriba de las cifras normales) [dependiendo del sitio donde se mida, variarán las cifras señaladas como normales. Así en la axila y en la ingle, los límites están entre 36 y 36.9 grados centígrados, para las tomas anal y bucal 0.4 grados más elevada], taquicardia, taquipnea, malestar general e intranquilidad o estupor.

Nomenclatura: Remitente [las variaciones durante el día nunca llegan a cifras normales]. Intermitente [las variaciones sí llegan a cifras normales]. Recurrente [si existen 24 hrs o más tiempo con cifras normales de temperatura]. En agujas [si se encuentran grandes oscilaciones de temperatura durante el día].
