With Alberta, one of the two provinces to enter the Canadian Confederation in 1905, and ninth in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation and, if on the same year, according to the population of the entering provinces. The provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created out of the Districts of Athabaska, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Assiniboia formed in 1882 in the Northwest Territories.

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Saskatchewan" for the geographical entity, "Province of Saskatchewan" for the provincial administration, "Saskatchewan" as the short form, and "Sask." as the abbreviation.

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is SK (or CA-SK).
