A vessel that directly interconnects the arterial and venous systems and that acts as a shunt to bypass the capillary bed.

OBS

arteriolovenular anastomosis; arteriovenous anastomosis: Although the term anastomosis arteriovenosa is widely used, for the sake of correctness anastomosis arteriolovenularis is the preferred term, since the structure in question does not link an artery and a vein, but an arteriole and a venule.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cardiovascular System
CONT

Adequate tissue perfusion depends on blood flow through vascular channels in which diffusion between the blood and tissues can occur. These channels are referred to as nutritional capillaries, as contrasted to nonnutritional vessels, which do not permit capillary exchange. The latter are referred to as arteriovenous shunts.

Key term(s)
  • AV shunt

French

Domaine(s)
  • Système cardio-vasculaire
DEF
