D'autre part, en cours de cuisson, ces argiles diverses changent de couleur et réagissent différemment. On les classe d'après leur tenue au feu en argiles réfractaires et en argiles fusibles. Une argile est dite réfractaire quand elle ne s'affaisse pas à la montre n° 26 de Seger, soit environ 1 580 °C. La qualité d'une argile réfractaire est due à sa haute teneur en alumine et à sa faible teneur en oxydes métalliques, fer, calcium et surtout en alcalis.
