Double rainbows are fairly common. ... the primary rainbow appears opposite the sun at an angular distance of about 42 degrees from the antisolar point. The primary bow is the result of a refraction as a ray of sunlight enters the drop, one internal reflection off the back of the drop, and a second refraction as the ray exits the drop. The geometry for the secondary bow is similar except that there are two internal reflections inside the drop. This geometry results in the appearance of the secondary rainbow at an angular distance of about 51 degrees, outside the primary bow.

This primary bow has a red outer boundary which is located at an angle of 42 degrees away from a line from the sun to the viewer. To see the primary bow the viewer must face away from the sun. A secondary bow with colors reversed so that the red edge is toward the inner border is frequently seen about 8 degrees outside the primary bow. It is weaker than the primary bow because the light undergoes two reflections, and consequently more absorption, inside the raindrops.

A night time rainbow is sometimes called a moon bow because it is a reflection of the light of the moon. ... Any rainbow comes from light hitting drops of rain and going into the drop and being reflected off of the inside edge. As the light leaves the drop on it's return journey the other side of the drop acts like a prism and separates it into the colors of the rainbow. ... with moon light it makes something shaped like a rainbow with just a hint color. Moon bows occur in the side of the sky opposite the moon.

Even though the optics of both is the same, the luminance of the lunar rainbow is much lower. As a result of the eye's reduced sensitivity to color at low light levels, the bow may exhibit little color. There are several reasons why the lunar rainbow is seen much less frequently than the solar bow. While the moon and sun spend equal time above the horizon, when they are both present, only a solar bow can be seen. This, by itself, means that the lunar rainbow could form only half as often. Further, the moon goes through phases, and so even at night may not contribute enough light to produce a discernible bow. Finally, the convective showers in which the rainbow is frequently seen are much less common at night.

Dew bows are rainbows which form in spherical dew droplets. The bows are relatively rare; usually you only see a portion of the dewbow in a spiderweb, a wall, or on grass and vegetation. Some grasses may show the dewbow very nicely while others will not. The dewbow appears spherical around the antisolar point, but if you see it projected on the ground, the projection may look elliptical, parabolic or hyperbolic depending on solar altitude.
