The primary bow is the result of a refraction as a ray of sunlight enters the drop, one internal reflection off the back of the drop, and a second refraction as the ray exits the drop. The geometry for the secondary bow is similar except that there are two internal reflections inside the drop. This primary bow has a red outer boundary which is located at an angle of 42 degrees away from a line from the sun to the viewer. To see the primary bow the viewer must face away from the sun. A secondary bow with colors reversed so that the red edge is toward the inner border is frequently seen about 8 degrees outside the primary bow. Le violet se trouve à l'intérieur et le rouge à l'extérieur. On observe aussi, souvent, un second arc, de moindre intensité et d'un rayon de 51° dont les couleurs se présentent dans l'ordre inverse. On observe occasionnellement jusqu'à six arcs-en-ciel secondaires, contigus au bord interne (violet) de l'arc principal.
