ARCO TANGENTE HALO 46 [2 records]

Record 1 2005-07-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

tangent arcs to 46° halo: Luminous arcs similar to rainbow fragments symmetrically located with respect to the luminary (Sun or Moon) toward which they turn their convexity; when the large halo of 46° is visible, they are tangent to it at points symmetrically placed on the lower semi-circumference of the halo.

OBS

tangent arc to 46° halo: term frequently used in the plural (tangent arcs to 46° halo).

Key term(s)
  • tangent arcs to 46° halo
  • tangent arc to the 46 degree halo
  • 46° tangent arcs
  • 46° tangent arc
  • tangent arcs to the 46 degree halo
  • forty-six degree tangent arc
  • forty-six degree tangent arcs

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

An arc of light tangent to a halo. It forms by refraction of light through ice crystals.

CONT

A tangent arc is a patch of bright light that is occasionally observed along a halo. This occurs when sunlight is refracted by falling hexagonal "pencil-shaped" ice crystals whose long axes are oriented horizontally.

CONT

tangent arcs. ... The most common of these are the upper and lower tangent arcs to the halo of 22°. They form separate arcs when the sun is low, but as the sun climbs they join to produce the circumscribed halo. These arcs are explained by refraction through the 60° prism sides of columnar crystals oriented with their long axes horizontal.

PHR

tangent arc to 22° halo, to 46° halo.

PHR

22° upper, 22° lower, lower, upper tangent arc.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT
