A clear, colorless, volatile liquid, CHCl3, with a strong ethereal smell and a sweetish, burning taste [which is] used to induce general anesthesia by inhalation of its vapor.

As is the case with methane or tropospheric ozone, many of the lesser greenhouse gases (methyl chloroform, methylene chloride, methyl chloride, CFC-22, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform) are removed from the atmosphere through photochemical reactions involving OH.

Chloroform is used in fluorocarbon refrigerants, fluorocarbon plastics, solvent, analytical chemistry, fumigant, and insecticides.

"flammability": a descriptive indication of the relative combustibility of a material.

"flammability": Revived in modern use to avoid the possible ambiguity of "inflammability", in which the prefix "in-" might be taken for a negative.

"inflammability" is unquestionably capable of being misunderstood. The fire research interest on the ... committee were anxious that we should standardize on "flammability" in order to prevent such misunderstanding.

The term "inflammability" has been standardized by ISO but should nonetheless be avoided for the reasons explained above.
