Most teams will bunt the ball toward the first-base line because the third baseman is charging hard; the second baseman then covers first. It is very important to get an out on this play. Lots of teams use the fake bunt and swing, or what is called the "slash."

Slash bunt. This offensive play takes place when the defense is expecting a bunt and is charging hard prior to the pitch getting ready to field the bunt. Show bunt and when the defense charges pull the bat back with a choked up grip and put the ball in play, on the ground.

Se aprecia un matiz distintivo entre "plusmarquista" y "hombre récord" : mientras que "plusmarquista" es aquel que consigue la mejor marca en una prueba única, "hombre récord" se emplea para referirse al deportista que alcanza una mejor marca en el cómputo global de varias competiciones. Así, un nadador es "plusmarquista" si bate el récord en una carrera, pero es "hombre récord" si es quien más medallas de oro ha acumulado, por ejemplo, a lo largo de varios Juegos Olímpicos.

A cylindrical instrument used to hit a baseball, usually made of wood and tapered at one end.

A bat is made of one piece of solid wood or from a block of wood consisting of two or more pieces bonded together in such a way that the grain direction is parallel to the length of the bat. It can be as long as 42 inches [though 36 or 37 inches is rarely exceeded for a baseball bat, and as long as 34 inches for a softball bat] and must not exceed a diameter of 2 3/4 inches [2 1/4 inches for a softball bat] at its thickest part. Tape or another sticky substance may be applied to the handle to permit a better grip, but should not be higher than 18 inches [10 to 15 inches for a softball bat] up the handle.

Bat nicknames have survived long usage, some of the more enduring being "lumber," "wood," "wand," "willow," "war club," "stick," "shillelagh." A bat is still called the "hickory" because it used to be made of the hardwood, although white ash has long since proved more satisfactory. The [term] "white tongue" as a synonym dates to the 1880s when A.G. Spalding advertised for 100,000 wagon tongues to be turned into bats.

The offensive player located in the batter's box next to home plate, the batter is responsible for swinging the bat in an attempt to hit the ball.

Once the hit ball touches the ground in fair territory, the batter becomes a "base runner" or "runner" even if he has not reached the first base. A batter can also become a runner after four pitched balls (a walk), when he is hit by a pitch from the pitcher, when the catcher drops a third strike called by the umpire as the first base is empty, and when the batted ball touches a referee or a runner after having touched a defensive player.

Plate Appearances (PA). The total number of plate appearances by opposing batters against the pitcher, including all at-bats, bases on balls allowed, batters hit by pitch and sacrifice flies allowed.

In baseball statistics, a player is credited with a plate appearance (denoted by PA) each time he completes a turn batting. A player completes a turn batting when he is declared out before reaching first base, or he reaches first base safely, or he hits a fair ball which causes a third out on another runner ... .

The only thing that does not count as a plate appearance is when the time at bat is interrupted by an inning ending, caught stealing or other event to prevent the completion of the plate appearance.

A box score is in balance (or proved) when the total of the team’s times at bat, bases on balls received, hit batters, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies and batters awarded first base because of interference or obstruction equals the total of that team’s runs, players left on base and the opposing team’s putouts.

In common terminology, the term "at bat" is sometimes used to mean "plate appearance" (for example, "he fouled off the ball to keep the at bat alive"). The intent is usually clear from the context, although the term "official at bat" is sometimes used to explicitly refer to an at bat as distinguished from a plate appearance.
