AlloDerm is made from donated human skin. It is handled in much the same way as other transplantable organs. The tissue is processed to remove cells that might cause the body to reject the foreign tissue or react negatively to it. What's left is the collagen structure (fiber-like proteins) and other proteins naturally found in skin. Le greffon dermique acellulaire est un biomatériau récemment utilisé dans les procédures médicales et dentaires. Le tissu est prélevé par voie chirurgicale sur un donneur dans des conditions stériles de salle d'opération. AlloDerm est traité pour éliminer les couches épidermiques et toutes les cellules du derme. Puisque le procédé d'AlloDerm consiste à éliminer toutes les cellules, aucun virus ne peut être transmis. Un second traitement antiviral est effectué en vue d'ajouter un agent inactivant du VIH. En outre, par l'élimination des cellules, il n'y a plus aucun élément susceptible de provoquer un rejet.
