Au moment de la métamorphose, la chenille tisse autour d'elle une enveloppe en soie à partir d'une substance qu'elle sécrète. Chaque cocon est, par la suite, plongé dans l'eau bouillante pour étouffer la chenille. Chaque cocon fournit de 300 à 1.500 m de fil. Pour obtenir un fil plus gros, on dévide 3 à 8 cocons ensemble. Le cocon est une sorte de pelote creuse dont les parois sont composées de fils de soie enroulés, ces fils ayant été sécrétés par deux glandes du ver. Certains cocons sont conservés pour l'élevage du ver parce qu'à l'intérieur du cocon, la chenille se transforme en chrysalide, et au bout d'une vingtaine de jours, devient un papillon qui sort du cocon en le perçant. Mais la majeure partie des cocons est soumise à l'étouffage à 80 degrés. Et, à partir de là, le fil si précieux est né. 4, record 4, French, - cocon
