Complex international experiment conducted from June to September 1974 as the first major component of GARP [Global Atmospheric Research Program] to study physical processes in the tropical atmosphere, in particular Cumulus convection, and their relation to large-scale weather systems in the tropics and the general circulation of the atmosphere.

One of the central objectives of GATE was to ... better understand the mechanism or mechanisms by which deep cumulus convection is organized by the synoptic or large-scale motions and how the resulting convective activity affects the synoptic motions that can be resolved in large-scale models.
