CIRCULACION OCEANICA [7 records]

Record 1 2021-01-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
CONT

Ocean circulation is a key regulator of climate by storing and transporting heat, carbon, nutrients and freshwater all around the world. Complex and diverse mechanisms interact with one another to produce this circulation and define its properties.

OBS

ocean circulation: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
DEF

DEF

Horizontal water motion of the ocean due to the stress exerted on its surface by the wind.

CONT

The main principles of wind-driven ocean circulation are as follows. 1. Wind stress causes transport of water in a thin Ekman surface layer. 2. If there is a curl to the wind stress, the Ekman layer transport will converge or diverge, causing downwelling or upwelling. 3. The downwelling or upwelling motions cause fluid columns to squash or stretch vertically, and this causes slow southward or northward flow due to conservation of potential vorticity. 4. The southward or northward flow is determined by the Sverdrup relationship, which links the N-S transport of water with the curl of the wind stress. In order to conserve mass, the water returns to its original position via a relatively thin boundary layer adjacent to the western edge of the basin.

OBS

The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) is by far the largest, most ambitious oceanographic experiment ever carried out. The WOCE observational program began in 1990, but the origins of WOCE go back to the late 1970s. The experiment has involved the efforts of more than 40 nations over a period of more than 10 years, making use of several different satellites, dozens of ships, and thousands of instruments ... In 1983, the CCCO [Committee on Climatic Change and the Ocean] and the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme established a Scientific Steering Group (SSG) to design and implement a global scale oceanographic experiment the World Ocean Circulation Experiment.
