In augmented reality systems, augmentations are output to a user to alter their experience of a real world environment. Often an augmented reality (AR) system will superimpose images such as shapes or icons on top of a real world view captured by a camera or else seen directly through a see-through head mounted display (HMD).

Les systèmes de RA [réalité augmentée] peuvent être définis par les relations qu'ils mettent en place entre le réel et ses augmentations virtuelles. Elles définissent directement le degré d'immersion dans le monde mixte, mêlant les objets réels aux objets virtuels. Ce monde mixte est d'autant plus cohérent que les interactions entre réel et virtuel sont prises en compte, tant au niveau visuel qu'au niveau comportemental. Retenons qu'en RA, les augmentations doivent avoir lieu en temps réel. À contrario, l'intégration a posteriori d'objets virtuels dans une représentation du réel (photographie, film) ne relève pas de la RA mais du domaine de la post-production.

Se define la realidad aumentada como una tecnología que permite añadir contenido digital o información virtual a elementos del mundo real haciendo de la percepción de éste una experiencia más enriquecedora. Esta tecnología permite incorporar información digital en forma de imagen, texto, audio, modelos 3D, etc. Tal como [se] comenta […] en [un] curso de introducción a la RA [realidad aumentada], "estos ’aumentos’ de la realidad pueden ayudar a mejorar el conocimiento del individuo y permitirle un mayor grado de comprensión de lo que sucede a su alrededor".

OBS

No confundir con "aumentación", que es un término que se utiliza para referirse a la acción de agregar elementos virtuales a entornos de realidad aumentada.
