Les boîtes de vitesses mécaniques comportent un arbre d'entrée et un arbre de sortie coaxiaux et un arbre intermédiaire décalé, entraîné en permanence par l'arbre d'entrée (par l'intermédiaire d'un couple d'engrenages). Cet arbre intermédiaire porte autant d'engrenages qu'il y a de rapports (généralement quatre ou cinq rapports avant et un rapport arrière), moins un. Chacun de ces engrenages entraîne un engrenage homologue monté fou sur l'arbre de sortie (ils tournent librement sur lui, sans l'entraîner). Un engrenage intermédiaire est inséré, pour le rapport arrière, entre l'engrenage de l'arbre intermédiaire et celui de l'arbre de sortie.
