The process whereby a company may share its risk with another, paying to such sharing company a portion of the premium it receives.

CONT

Reinsurance has the same economic objective as insurance generally, that is the transfer and consequent elimination or reduction of risk by the creation of a wider spread of exposure.

OBS

Reinsurance contracts pay only the company which reinsures, not the policyholder.
