The Convention on Biological Diversity provides a global legal framework for action on biodiversity. Uno de los acuerdos fundamentales aprobados en Río fue el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica. Este pacto entre la gran mayoría de los gobiernos mundiales establece los compromisos de mantener los sustentos ecológicos mundiales a medida que avanzamos en el desarrollo económico.
