The Convention on Biological Diversity provides a global legal framework for action on biodiversity. En la Cumbre para la Tierra celebrada en 1992 en Río de Janeiro, los líderes mundiales se pusieron de acuerdo en una estrategia exhaustiva de "desarrollo sostenible" que atienda a nuestras necesidades y al mismo tiempo permita legar a las generaciones futuras un mundo sano y viable. Uno de los acuerdos fundamentales aprobados en Río fue el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica. Este pacto entre la gran mayoría de los gobiernos mundiales establece los compromisos de mantener los sustentos ecológicos mundiales a medida que avanzamos en el desarrollo económico.
