CORONA SOLAR [3 records]

Record 1 2024-04-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
DEF

[The] outermost region of the Sun's atmosphere ...

OBS

It has a temperature of approximately two million kelvins and an extremely low density. The corona continually varies in size and shape as it is affected by the Sun's magnetic field. ... The corona shines only about half as brightly as the Moon and is normally not visible to the unaided eye, because its light is overwhelmed by the brilliance of the solar surface. During a total solar eclipse, however, the Moon blocks out the light from the photosphere, permitting naked-eye observations of the corona.

Key term(s)
  • corona of the Sun

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

Coronal rain is the fall of cool and dense blobs formed by thermal instability in the solar corona towards the solar surface with acceleration smaller than gravitational free fall.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Soleil (Astronomie)
CONT

Record 3 2003-11-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
DEF

Layer of the Sun's atmosphere just outside the photosphere which is visually observed when the Sun is totally eclipsed and spectroscopically observable at other times.

CONT

Immediately above the photosphere and extending for an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 miles is the "chromosphere". The chromosphere can be seen during a total solar eclipse just seconds before and after totality ... The chromosphere must be at a lower pressure and temperature than the photosphere which emits the background continuous spectrum.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Soleil (Astronomie)
DEF
