  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A jet stream that is typically found in the lower 2-3 km of the troposphere.

OBS

In most sources, the designations "low-level jet" and "low-level jet stream" are considered as synonyms. But according to some authors, they are not synonymous because they show obvious dfferences in their distribution, horizontal and vertical structure, diurnal variations, formation mechanisms, as well as their effects on rainstorms.

Key term(s)
  • low-level jetstream

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

Record 2 2004-02-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Night-time layer of strong wind, of supergeostrophic speed, at a height of a few hundred metres above ground.

OBS

Such a layer may develop when the strong cooling over land at night separates the flow aloft from the constraint of surface friction.

Key term(s)
  • nocturnal jet-stream

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF
