A relative small scale downward current of air; often observed on the lee side of large objects restricting the smooth flow of air, or in precipitation areas in or near cumuliform clouds.

OBS

air pocket: an expression used in the early days of aviation for a downdraft. Pioneer pilots at first imagined these downdrafts to be "pockets" in which there was insufficient air to support the plane.

Le mouvement de l'air turbulent se manifeste sous forme de poussées momentanées et rapides qui peuvent présenter une orientation absolument quelconque. Parmi celles-ci, on peut distinguer : les rafales qui ne concernent que les variations de la vitesse horizontale du vent, sans modification de direction; les mouvements verticaux qui englobent tous les courants aériens ascendants ou descendants.

OBS

Le terme «rabattant» semble employé par les pilotes pour décrire le phénomène de courant descendant lors du survol des régions montagneuses. Cependant, cette particularité n'est consignée dans aucune source. De plus, le terme «rabattant» est un terme de jargon.

CONT

On a attribué longtemps la turbulence à la présence de «trous d'air», en fait il n'y a pas de «trous» dans l'air, la turbulence est généralement due à des déflections vers le haut ou vers le bas du vent horizontal.

OBS

Le terme «trou d'air» n'est pas qualifié de terme vieilli dans les dictionnaires contrairement à son équivalent anglais «air pocket».

Downburst with a small lateral extent, about 1 to 4 km, and lasting only a short time.

The microburst has a strong downflow descending very close to the ground. The ground turns the vertical winds into horizontal winds. The maximum horizontal extent of a microburst is on the order of 4 km in diameter but can be less than 1 km in diameter. Despite this small scale, an intense microburst can induce horizontal wind radials as high as 160 km/h.

La microrafale est caractérisée par un fort courant descendant qui arrive très près du sol. En se rapprochant du sol, le vent vertical devient un vent horizontal. Le diamètre maximal de la microrafale est de l'ordre de 4 km, mais il arrive qu'il soit inférieur à 1 km. Malgré cette petite échelle, une microrafale de forte intensité produit des vents horizontaux pouvant atteindre 160 km/h.

Violent and damaging downdraught reaching the surface, associated with a severe thunderstorm.

Downbursts occur in regions of a severe thunderstorm where the air is accelerated downward by exceptionally strong evaporative cooling occurs (a dry downburst) or by very heavy rain which drags dry air down with it (a wet downburst). When the rapidly descending air strikes the ground, it spreads outward in all directions in a circle, like a fast-running faucet hitting the sink bottom. Dr. Fujita has defined downbursts as a surface wind in excess of 62 km/hr (39 mph) caused by a small-scale downdraft from the base of a convective cloud. He further subdivided downbursts into two categories macrobursts and microbursts.

Des rafales descendantes ou «avalanche d'air» sont également associés aux orages violents. Il s'agit de courants d'air descendants qui s'étendent lorsqu'ils touchent la surface du sol et produisent des vents directs pouvant atteindre jusqu'à 200 km à l'heure. Comme les tornades, les rafales descendantes peuvent causer des dommages considérables. De tels rafales produisent un bruit assourdissant, semblable à celui d'une tornade.

Une rafale descendante [...] a un effet sur l'incidence de l'avion. Cette incidence diminue ce qui a pour effet de diminuer la portance, ce qui peut être dangereux lorsque l'avion est en phase d'atterrissage.
