Elle est provoquée par un champignon : Diplodia phoenicum (Sacc.) Fawc. et Klotz (= Macrophoma phoenicum Sacc.), qui se développe sur les palmes, surtout celles des rejets. Ce champignon provoque la décomposition des péticles et des gaines d'où la formation de stries ternes brun-jaunâtre, larges à la base et s'amincissant vers le sommet des palmes.
