Record 1, Textual support, English
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A decrease of temperature at the Earth's surface or within the atmosphere due to a negative radiation balance, i.e. when infrared emission from a particular volume or body is greater than solar and/or infrared absorption by that volume or body. 4, record 1, English, - radiative%20cooling
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Radiative cooling occurs when the sun is no longer supplying the ground and overlying air with energy derived from solar insolation (e.g., night). Instead, the surface of the Earth now begins to lose energy in the form of longwave radiation which causes the ground and air above it to cool. The clouds that result from this type of cooling take the form of surface fog. 5, record 1, English, - radiative%20cooling
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
radiational cooling. Although it occurs primarily at night, it happens when the earth's surface suffers a net loss of heat due to outgoing radiation. 6, record 1, English, - radiative%20cooling
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 CONT
The strong radiative cooling should result in a melt-freeze crust. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.] 7, record 1, English, - radiative%20cooling

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
1, record 1, French, - refroidissement%20radiatif
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
4, record 1, French, - refroidissement%20radiatif
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 DEF
Temperature inversion produced by nocturnal radiational cooling of the Earth's surface, a snow or ice surface, or the upper part of a cloud layer, etc. 5, record 2, English, - radiation%20inversion
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
A special case of the absolutely-stable layer is the "inversion" layer (in which temperature increases with increasing height). We think of three types of inversion: the nocturnal radiation inversion (seasonal rather than nocturnal, in the long arctic night); frontal inversion; subsidence inversion 4, record 2, English, - radiation%20inversion
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
radiation inversion. It does not usually extend above the lower few hundred feet. Conditions which are favorable for this type of inversion are: long nights, clear skies, dry air, little or no wind, and a cold or snow covered surface. 6, record 2, English, - radiation%20inversion

3, record 2, French, - inversion%20de%20rayonnement
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
6, record 2, French, - inversion%20de%20rayonnement

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
Westerly jet stream of maximum intensity near the stratopause, in the middle and subpolar latitudes of the winter hemisphere, caused by prolonged radiative cooling of the air in high latitudes during this season. 1, record 3, English, - polar%20night%20jet
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Polar-night jet stream. This jet meanders through the upper stratosphere over the poles. It occurs only during the long winter night. Remember, night is 6 months long over the pole in which winter is occurring. The polar stratosphere undergoes appreciable cooling due to the lack of solar radiation. The horizontal temperature gradient is strongly established between the equator and the pole, and the pressure gradient creates this westerly jet. The temperature gradient breaks down intermittently during middle and late winter in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, the jet is intermittent at these times. In the Southern Hemisphere the temperature gradient and jet disappear rather abruptly near the time of the spring equinox. 3, record 3, English, - polar%20night%20jet
