Record 1 2016-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Optics
  • Computer Graphics
  • Mineralogy
  • Plastic Materials
DEF

The refraction of light (as in most crystals) in two slightly different directions to form two rays.

CONT

If a clear injection-molded part is placed between two polarizing filters, one of which is rotated, a characteristic series of colored bands appears primarily related to orientation stress in the part. This phenomenon is called birefringence.

Domaine(s)
  • Optique
  • Infographie
  • Minéralogie
  • Matières plastiques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A very pure and transparent variety of calcite, the best of which is obtained in Iceland, that cleaves easily and perfectly into rhombohedrons and that exhibits strong double refraction; an optical calcite. It occurs in vugs and cavities in volcanic rocks and as nodules in residual clays in limestone regions.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
DEF
