Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermally-driven separation process, in which only vapour molecules transfer through a microporous hydrophobic membrane. The driving force in the MD process is the vapour pressure difference induced by the temperature difference across the hydrophobic membrane. This process has various applications, such as desalination, wastewater treatment and in the food industry. 3, record 1, English, - membrane%20distillation

3, record 1, French, - distillation%20membranaire

The octanol-water partition coefficient is the ratio of the concentration of a chemical in octanol and in water at equilibrium and at a specified temperature. Octanol is an organic solvent that is used as a surrogate for natural organic matter. This parameter is used in many environmental studies to help determine the fate of chemicals in the environment. An example would be using the coefficient to predict the extent a contaminant will bioaccumulate in fish. The octanol-water partition coefficient has been correlated to water solubility; therefore, the water solubility of a substance can be used to estimate its octanol-water partition coefficient. 11, record 6, English, - octanol%2Dwater%20partition%20coefficient

A hydrophilic colloidal material used largely in food products as emulsifying, thickening and gelling agents. They readily absorb water, thus increasing viscosity and imparting smoothness and body texture to the product, even in concentrations of less than 1%. Natural types are plant exudates (gum arabic), seaweed extracts (agar), plant seed gums or mucilages (guar gum), cereal gums (starches), fermentation gums (dextran), and animal products (gelatin). Semisynthetic types are modified celluloses and modified starches. Completely synthetic types are also available, e.g., polyvinylpyrrolidone. 4, record 9, Spanish, - nanogota
