A rod plate or tube containing a material that readily captures neutrons (cadmium, boron, hafnium, gadolinium, or silver-indium) used to control the power of a nuclear reactor by absorbing neutrons.

CONT

Control rods are set between fuel rods to regulate rate of nuclear reaction. Withdrawal of the rods permits free passage of neutrons from one fuel rod to another, increasing reaction rate.
