English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
  • Immunology
CONT

Interferons (IFNs) are cytokines produced and secreted by virtually all eukaryotic cells in response to stimulation by certain viruses, bacteria, antigens, and mitogens. They mediate their biological activity by binding to specific receptors on the cell surface. These proteins were named IFNs because they interfere with the viruses' replication ...

CONT

DEF

An "early warning" system that cells use to initiate an immune response against a viral infection.

OBS

A collective term for the acid-stable interferons IFN-alpha and IFN-beta which differ immunologically and with regard to some biologic and physiochemical properties. IFN-delta and IFN-kappa are also grouped as a Type-1 interferon.

DEF
