An "early warning" system that cells use to initiate an immune response against a viral infection.

OBS

A collective term for the acid-stable interferons IFN-alpha and IFN-beta which differ immunologically and with regard to some biologic and physiochemical properties. IFN-delta and IFN-kappa are also grouped as a Type-1 interferon.

En el ser humano se han identificado tres tipos de interferones principales: alfa, beta y gamma. Los interferones alfa y beta integran la clase I y el interferón gamma la tipo II. Los interferones tipo I aumentan la función supresora inespecífica de las células T.

Las citocinas antivirales por excelencia son los interferones tipo I. Inhiben la replicación viral debido a que inducen en las células la síntesis de enzimas, tales como 2’-5’ oligoadenilato sintetasa, que colectivamente interfieren la replicación del ARN y ADN viral.
