Economic force that tends to automatically offset increasing and decreasing trends in different economic cycle phases. For example, income tax, which is progressive, increases more proportionately than family income growth, and therefore tends to reduce private consumption in boom periods.

CONT

Already, taxes automatically fall and transfer payments rise when the gross national product and income decline, and just the opposite occurs when GNP and GNY rise. This behaviour has earned taxes and transfer payments the names "automatic stabilizers" or "built-in stabilizers".
