This procedure [needle localization] is used when the abnormality in the breast is not palpable, yet the mammogram results are suspicious and require a surgical biopsy. If the surgeon recommends an excisional biopsy to remove the non-palpable area of suspicion, then, using ultrasound or mammography, the radiologist inserts a thin needle into the breast before surgery that will guide the surgeon in locating the suspicious area for removal.

Digital mammography: Standard screen-film systems currently used in mammography have a number of well-known limitations including poor detective quantum efficiency and limited dynamic range. We are investigating large area, high performance digital detectors to replace these systems and allow more direct utilization of digital processing techniques and computer-aided diagnosis in the detection of subtle breast cancers. An x-ray of the breast used to detect breast changes in women who have no signs of breast cancer. It usually involves two x-rays of each breast. Using a mammogram, it is possible to detect a tumor that cannot be felt. 2, record 6, English, - screening%20mammogram
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Screening mammograms look for breast cancer when there are no signs or symptoms that suggest its presence. These routine breast X-rays are usually recommended by family doctors along with regular general physical examinations for women who are aged 50 to 69. For many women under 50, screening mammography is not always suitable because the breast tissue is dense and small tumours are difficult to detect. 3, record 6, English, - screening%20mammogram

1, record 6, French, - mammographie%20de%20d%C3%A9pistage
