Les marqueurs génomiques, aujourd’hui couramment étudiés, sont des loci de courte séquence (2 à 5 nucléotides), répétés un nombre variable de fois, et appelés STR («Short Tandem Repeat» [séquence courte répétée en tandem]) ou microsatellites. Il s’agit donc d’un polymorphisme de taille qui présente surtout l’intérêt d’être poly-allélique, donc très informatif, et d’être réparti de façon à peu près uniforme sur l’ensemble du génome dans les espaces inter-géniques, dans les introns et les régions flanquantes des gènes.
