Como resultado de la labor individual de millones de usuarios de Internet que almacenan y etiquetan contenidos web en aplicaciones de marcadores sociales, se obtiene la folcsonomía. Esta tiene tres elementos básicos : la persona que etiqueta, el recurso web etiquetado y el nombre de la etiqueta que se adhiere a ese contenido. Por lo tanto, la folcsonomía es el resultado de la acción de etiquetar individualmente, sin jerarquías y usando una aplicación con características sociales, cualquier contenido digital que tenga una dirección web(URL). El valor de la folcsonomía radica en que las personas pueden usar libremente su propio vocabulario para darle nombre a las etiquetas en lugar de regirse por una taxonomía jerárquica de palabras que previamente alguien determinó.
