Cet agent est généralement appelé durcisseur ou agent de pontage et le polymère de départ est appelé prépolymère. L'opération s'appelle une réticulation (vulcanisation dans le cas de caoutchoucs).

Dans le langage courant, on emploie aussi cuire et son dérivé cuisson.

De nombreux ouvrages donnent aussi, comme synonyme de «cuire», le verbe «durcir». En réalité, le durcissement est un phénomène qui résulte de la cuisson. Il correspond à l'anglais «hardening». «Polymérisation» et «réticulation» sont des spécifiques, correspondant aux termes anglais «polymerization» et «cross-linking».
