The concept of sentinel lymph node sampling is appealing because of the potential of such biopsies to increase the likelihood of identifying lymph node metastases when they are present and obviating the need for a formal (and morbid) lymph node dissection when the sentinel node is negative.

There is a technique called sentinel lymph node sampling that removes fewer lymph nodes than a traditional complete axillary node dissection. Many women are candidates for the sentinel lymph node technique, which has fewer complications than the complete axillary node dissection. If, however, there is cancer present in the sentinel lymph nodes, then more nodes are removed and this is referred to as a complete level 1 and level 2 axillary lymph node dissection.

Le prélèvement du ganglion sentinelle est une technique qui permet d'identifier le premier relais ganglionnaire, c'est-à-dire celui qui est plus à risque d'être atteint de cancer, de le prélever et de le faire analyser. Cette technique permet un diagnostic beaucoup plus précis et d'éviter de faire la dissection axillaire chez bon nombre de patientes.

La technique micro-invasive la plus intéressante est certainement la biopsie du ganglion sentinelle (GS). Par définition, le GS est le premier relais ganglionnaire recevant le drainage lymphatique afférent d'une tumeur primitive, supposée se propager par relais ganglionnaires contigus ce qui est le cas des tumeurs mammaires [...] La technique de prélèvement du GS, dans le cadre du cancer du sein n'engendre que de minimes effets secondaires au point de pouvoir être réalisée de manière semi-ambulatoire.

El ganglio centinela es el primer ganglio encontrado por la células tumorales y su naturaleza histológica predice la invasión ganglionar del grupo distal. Se utiliza un colorante, azul patente, y/o, una substancia radioactiva, tecnecio 99. [...] Quizás el aspecto más importante de esta técnica sea su validación desde el punto de vista oncológico. Es decir, que las pacientes sometidas a muestreo del ganglio centinela no empeoren su pronóstico por subestadiaje de la axila.
