Las tintas ferrogálicas son soluciones acuosas formadas a partir de sales de hierro (Fe) y ácido gálico o tánico (que aportan taninos), formando un complejo orgánico metálico de color oscuro, aglutinado, por lo general, con alguna goma natural. Su utilización data al menos [del] siglo VII, y por tratarse de tintas permanentes y de fácil elaboración, sustituyeron rápidamente a las tintas de carbón y fueron las más utilizadas desde la Edad Media hasta avanzado el siglo XX.

The Dutch Fe-Migration Mending Test. … It aims to test the act of treatment itself, which is applied to a paper impregnated with bathophenanthroline and stamped with an iron gall ink. Migrations of Fe(II) out of the ink line are visually assessed through the occurrence of pink halos. This test is particularly sensitive. If no pink halo appears, the treatment process can be implemented with confidence on original objects.
