TROMBA [5 records]

Record 1 2024-09-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

[A] funnel-shaped or tubular column of rotating, cloud-filled wind usually extending from the underside of a Cumulus or Cumulonimbus cloud down to a cloud of spray torn up by the whirling winds from the surface of an ocean or lake.

CONT

[A] waterspout is not filled with water from [an] ocean or lake. ... The water inside a waterspout is formed by condensation in the cloud [from which it descends].

OBS

Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
OBS

Record 2 2017-04-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Cloud formed at the core of a waterspout or tornado vortex, sometimes extending right down to the ground, caused by the reduction of pressure at the centre of the vortex.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 3 2005-03-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A phenomenon consisting of an often violent whirlwind, revealed by the presence of a cloud column or inverted cloud cone (funnel cloud), protruding from the base of a Cumulonimbus, and of a "bush" composed of water droplets raised from the surface of the sea or of dust, sand or litter, raised from the ground.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

Record 4 2004-07-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

suction vortices: Whirlwinds (typically 3 to 5) which sometimes accompany a tornado; they hang down from the base of the tornado-producing cloud and revolve around and in the same direction as the winds in the main funnel.

OBS

The transition of a one-celled vortex into secondary vortices in laboratory and numerical simulations occurs at high swirl ratios. The vortices produce cycloidal swaths within tornado damage tracks and are often used to explain the gradation of wind damage caused by a tornado. Structures in the path of a suction vortex are damaged while others are spared.

OBS

plural: suction vortices.

Key term(s)
  • suction vortices

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF
