Le terme «fret», équivoque, peut revêtir trois sens : a) le prix du transport de la marchandise; b) le prix du loyer du navire; c) les marchandises elles-mêmes. En droit maritime, le mot «fret» désigne exclusivement le prix versé pour le transport des marchandises; celles-ci sont désignées sous le nom de «cargaison» (voir cargo). Le fret peut être stipulé ou taxé : a) au poids, au volume; b) au poids ou au volume, au choix et à l'avantage du navire; c) à l'unité; d) ad valorem. La cotation complète du fret comprend : le taux de fret, les surcharges éventuelles, l'unité de taxe, la modalité du fret (bord, sous palan, etc.), les détaxes et ristournes prévues sous certaines conditions en faveur du chargeur.
