Le Congrès de Lyon de 1864 marqua le début à grande échelle de la production de vaccin antivariolique cultivé sur peau de veaux, une méthode lancée au début du 19e siècle par des chercheurs italiens. Le vaccin était recueilli à partir des pustules obtenues par inoculation en de multiples points puis broyé dans un mortier et enfin mis en suspension dans la glycérine.
