Au sens propre, le terme «déversement» désigne une action volontaire; c'est pourquoi son emploi est parfois critiqué lorsqu'il est question de substances qui se répandent accidentellement dans l'environnement. Il serait préférable d'être plus précis, et d'utiliser «déversements accidentels». Cependant, il semble que l'usage en ait décidé autrement car l'emploi de «déversement» est très répandu.
